On Monday 9th September, Mersey Maritime and Team Humber Marine Alliance, will join other cluster organisations to take part in a ‘Regional Spotlight’ event during London International Shipping Week 2019 (LISW). The afternoon event will be chaired by Mersey Maritime Chief Executive, Chris Shirling-Rooke, in his capacity as Assistant Chair of Maritime UK and will showcase some of the UK’s leading maritime regions, their recent developments and opportunities for investment and growth.
An audience of national and international guests will learn more about how clustering is being used to create a unique and attractive business environment amongst businesses large and small, academia and government. Featuring the work of five regional clusters (the South West, Solent and Scotland feature in earlier sessions), a series of presentations, debates and opportunities for questions will demonstrate the diversity and broad range of the UK’s strength in its maritime clusters.
After updating delegates on all the latest maritime news from the Liverpool City and Humber regions, Mersey Maritime and Team Humber Marine Alliance will close the afternoon with a panel debate on one of the hot topics of the moment: “Connecting and turbo-charging the Humber and Mersey coastal powerhouses – unleashing regional growth from east to west”.
Commenting, Chris Shirling-Rooke, said:
“Growth in the maritime sector isn’t just about figures on a piece of paper. For the members of Mersey Maritime, and the wider industry in the Liverpool City Region, we contribute well over £3bn to the local economy and support nearly 50,000 jobs locally. We want to see this growth continue and stand ready to play our part in the positive agenda of turbo-charging regional growth and prosperity.
“There’s a real opportunity to unleash further the maritime industry within our areas and transform the North of England into an East-West super-corridor, connecting Atlantic focused shipping with continental Europe.
“For our industry to be turbo-charged, we need to see East/West connectivity extend to connect Liverpool and the Humber ports as quickly as possible. That must include plans for rail freight optimisation between these strategic ports.”
Senior industry figures secured for the panel
Confirmed panellists for the discussion include:
- Lesley Batchelor OBE, Director General of the Institute of Export
- Gary Hodgson, Strategic Projects Director at Peel Ports Group
- Stephen Weaver, Head of Corporate Development at P&O Ferries, and
- Dafydd Williams, Head of Communications & Corporate Affairs at Associated British Ports.
Further panellists will be announced in the next few days, with the organisers hoping to secure the attendance of a senior Government Minister.
