We know that for many of our members the announcement by the Prime Minister earlier this week around the introduction of a new national lockdown isn’t the start to the year that we all wanted to see. It is clear that Covid-19 and possible variants of it remain deep in our communities and the immediate weeks and months ahead, particularly with the winter weather, will remain challenging. We would urge all our members to follow the clear guidance from both a healthcare and wider social distancing perspective, however we appreciate that a great many of you are key workers providing vital roles to keep the nation fed, fuelled and supplied, so please stay safe and thank you for all that you do. The full position and advice from Government is available here: https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus
Despite the challenge of this message, as we know, there is also hope firmly on the horizon. Amidst all the anxiety and turmoil that heightened restrictions and disruption to ‘normal life’ brings, let’s not lose sight of the fact that the United Kingdom now has two effective vaccines being deployed to many thousands of people every day. Right now we are the only country in the world currently vaccinating all at-risk groups and there’s a firm commitment that by mid-February the NHS expect to have vaccinated all in the top four priority groups (care home residents, front line health workers, all over 70 and the clinically extremely vulnerable). We certainly aren’t out of the woods yet, but our fervent hope is that we are in the final stages of the most restrictive measures we will have to endure. So, at the start of a New Year, after a year like no other, we can allow ourselves to be optimistic!
From a Mersey Maritime perspective we wanted to reassure our members that we haven’t gone away. Far from it! Whilst our office availability and ‘in person’ engagement in a physical sense will inevitably be restricted, in the weeks of the current lockdown, please be under no illusions that the team are available to you. Call us, email us, Zoom or Teams us – we have no intention of scaling back opportunities for engagement and interaction, so please use the contact details at the end of this message to make sure we keep in touch.
We also have a solid programme of events coming up in the weeks ahead and plan to add more in the near future. Whilst Covid-19 is inevitably a big feature of what member businesses are responding to, there are other strategic issues that haven’t gone away. The end of the UK-EU Transition phase is now a reality. Despite the very welcome news of a free trade deal having been agreed just before Christmas, it is vital for us to know how this is actually beginning to play out on the ground. You are our eyes and ears for this feedback but we believe Mersey Maritime, with the ability it has to engage with Government, has a real and tangible role to play in helping to represent your views to ministers and officials. There’s more to come on that soon, so watch this space.
Here’s just some of the events we have planned in the coming weeks – please get involved!
