Calling all Mersey Maritime Members – help us mark HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in a very special way as part of the national ‘Ships Salute’ on Saturday 04 June 2022 at 12:00 BST. A ‘Ships Salute’ is where every vessel in every UK Harbour sounds a simultaneous long loud blast on their horn or whistle at an agreed moment.
Chris Shirling-Rooke, Chief Executive of Mersey Maritime, writes:
“The occasion of HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is a truly remarkable and unique event in the long history of our island nation; it is unlikely to be seen again, certainly not in our lifetimes. As a proud maritime country, what better way to mark this occasion during the Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend than through the ‘Ships Salute’ which is planned to take place right in the middle of the festivities.
“Just a few weeks ago, the Royal Navy’s Fleet Flagship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, was alongside in Liverpool, a timely reminder of the association between the Monarchy and the finest traditions and service in our maritime sector. It would be fantastic if as many Mersey Maritime members as possible – merchant, naval and leisure vessels alike – could join in this synchronised ‘salute’ to 70 glorious years from their horn.”
Every vessel, regardless of size, class or category is invited to join the Ships Salute. Pre-registration isn’t required, but we would very much like to know if our Members are able to join in this unique event. If you are able to get involved with this simple and universal salute, please email: abbie.milne@merseymaritime.co.uk
