Phase 1 Community Consultation
Many of you will be aware that the Liverpool City Region CA have been undertaking a ‘community consultation’ in recent weeks around their emerging proposals for a Tidal Power project which seeks to harness the power of our region’s greatest asset, the River Mersey, for clean and green energy. A website with more details around the project, plans and timescales is available here: https://www.liverpoolcityregion-ca.gov.uk/its-time-for-tidal
The first public consultation on the Mersey Tidal Power project is open and will close on Friday 15th November 2024. It offers local people and organisations the opportunity to comment on initial proposals for a tidal barrage across the River Mersey and its associated infrastructure. Given our range of members and your own interests in the River Mersey / Estuary, it is likely that many of you will have views on these proposals and might wish to comment on them during this initial phase of consultation.
Whilst this is a non-statutory consultation, we understand that the project team will use the outcomes from it to further develop the proposals ahead of a further stage of statutory consultation which is expected to take place in 2025. For ease, we have listed below the broad outline timeframes relating to this, taken from the brochure which has been published to accompany the first consultation.
Timeframes (see page 22 of the brochure here: https://lcrlistens.liverpoolcityregion-ca.gov.uk/user_uploads/70107278_a4-booklet_revd_print–1-.pdf)
- October to November 2024. Non-statutory community consultation.
- 2024 to 2025. Further project development.
- 2025. Statutory consultation.
- 2026. Submission of application for a Development Consent Order to the Planning Inspectorate.
- 2026 to 2027. Planning Inspectorate ‘Examination’ following by decision.
- 2028. ‘Ready for construction’ – practical delivery of the infrastructure.
- 2036. Commissioning period of two years.
- 2038. Operations – the project will start operating.
