MERSEY MARITIME TO FORGE CLOSER LINKS WITH NAUTILUS INTERNATIONAL

Mersey Maritime is to work even more closely with Nautilus International with people and skills now top of the agenda for the future of the maritime sector.

An existing close partner of Mersey Maritime, Nautilus International represents 20,000 maritime professionals in its capacity as a global trade union. They include ship masters, officers, cadets, ship pilots, harbourmasters, seafarers of all kinds and shore-based workers.

As one of the leading industry cluster organisations in the maritime sector, recognised both nationally and internationally, Mersey Maritime represents hundreds of businesses of all sizes across 30-plus sub-sectors in the Liverpool city region.

Worth £5bn a year to the Liverpool City Region economy, the maritime industry provides employment for tens of thousands of people across Merseyside.

Each year Mersey Maritime holds the Maritime Exchange, a one-day conference that brings together leaders from across the UK maritime sector. Nautilus played a key role at the event in 2022 and 2023.

In 2022, and again this year, Nautilus is a sponsor of the Maritime Exchange and Mersey Maritime Industry Awards, and the two organisations have joined forces on the union’s Sea to City mentoring initiative.

Sea to City has been developed to support maritime professionals who are looking to make the transition landwards and are exploring their career opportunities ashore or in the city.

The mentoring scheme will pair full members of Nautilus considering a move ashore, with relevant Mersey Maritime members or stakeholders who will be able to offer guidance and support throughout the process. The first pairings are expected to commence in the autumn.

Ruth Wood, Interim Chief Executive at Mersey Maritime, said: “What is clear from our regular discussions with the maritime sector, and what manifested at the Maritime Exchange, is that maritime has to put people at the heart of its future strategy.

“A focus on skills, recruitment, education, digital technology and diversity and inclusion are vital to the future growth of our sector. That is being increasingly acknowledged by businesses, academia and Government. It is a key part of the UK’s Maritime 2050 strategy.

“This is why Nautilus International will have a big role to play in the coming years and decades. It is the skills and ingenuity of their members that will drive our sector forward and we believe a closer partnership between Mersey Maritime and Nautilus International will only make our sector stronger.”

Nautilus International General Secretary Mark Dickinson said: “If we want to inspire people to pursue maritime careers, we must address issues that exist within the system, ensuring that a just transition is delivered that leaves no seafarer behind in the rush to train and upskill for the future needs of the maritime industry.

“To maximise the opportunities that come from new and emerging sectors such as offshore renewables, ensuring good employment opportunities for our people in regions like Merseyside, investing in maritime training and careers is critical.’

“Automation and technological change, on their own, will not be the panacea to our problems. People must be at the heart of the future we are aiming towards.

“We are proud to forge a closer relationship with Mersey Maritime and to support maritime professionals at sea and ashore across the North West.”
