MERSEY MARITIME SIGNS ‘MENTAL HEALTH IN MARITIME’ PLEDGE

Mersey Maritime is delighted to announce that it is one of the first signatories to a new ‘Mental Health in Maritime’ Pledge which was launched officially by Maritime UK on Tuesday 02 March 2021. The pledge forms part of the wider ‘Diversity in Maritime’ initiative and specifically aims to ensure employee mental health and wellbeing is considered at the highest levels across the sector. The public commitment states:

“We are committed to improving the quality of mental health and wellbeing provision through action and support, at all levels, throughout our organisation and our industry.”

Commenting, Chief Executive of Mersey Maritime, Chris Shirling-Rooke, said:

“I am proud to sign this important pledge on behalf of Mersey Maritime. The last year, with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, has really brought home the importance of businesses being really conscious of matters relating to mental health and wellbeing. That’s why, at our last Maritime Exchange Conference last October, we dedicated an important session to discussing and raising awareness of these issues. Demonstrating that mental health is a priority for us is an important part of our work and marks our commitment to create a culture in our own organisation where employees feel comfortable talking about their own, should they choose to. We would like to see all our members get on board with this work and I’m delighted to see some of them already do so, including the Royal Navy, Kays Medical and Maritime Digital Hub.

“Mersey Maritime recognises that we have a responsibility to be one of the leading advocates for mental health and wellbeing in our industry here in the Liverpool City Region and also as part of this national initiative. But this isn’t just about attaching our signature to a worthy pledge, important though the message that sends is. We commit to working with our partners to ensure this pledge leads to visible action in our sphere of work and we are encouraging our maritime ecosystem regionally to support this vital initiative too.”

The ‘Mental Health in Maritime’ Pledge contains a specific statement of commitment, as follows:

We advocate and are committed to making a positive difference through action and support, not just within our organisations but also across the UK maritime sector and the broader maritime community. We commit:

  • To establish working conditions and practices that foster a positive mental health state. We will help anybody struggling with their mental health and ensure they feel safe in the knowledge they have been heard and not judged.
  • To dispel the stigma of mental health issues by establishing an open and trusting environment that allows people to listen and talk. We will provide signposts to help from a range of recognised and trusted sources.
  • To ensure our workforce have the skills, knowledge, and education to help support individuals whilst working both on land and at sea.
