Mersey Maritime receives Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award

Mersey Maritime has joined forty seven organisations from across the North West of England who have been awarded ‘Silver’ under the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme in recognition of its support to Defence and the wider Armed Forces community.

The Employer Recognition Scheme was launched to reward employers who support Defence People objectives and encourage others to do the same. This includes employing serving and former members of the Armed Forces community, and demonstrating flexibility towards training and mobilisation commitments for Reservists and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers.

Mersey Maritime is also proud to be associated with a number of its own members who have also achieved the same recognition: Artemis Media Profile Ltd, Kays Medical, Marine Specialised Technology, PSI Global and Seaking Electrical.

Commenting on the announcement of the 2024 Employer Recognition Scheme Silver awards; Ruth Wood, Chief Executive of Mersey Maritime said:

“We are delighted to have been awarded the Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award 2024. Mersey Maritime is proud of its association with the Armed Forces and Defence community and this accolade is a testament to our unwavering commitment to supporting it. Our values proudly align with the Armed Forces Covenant, particularly as we seek to champion those who serve and have served. As a diverse membership organisation across the maritime industry in the Liverpool City Region, we also know that this commitment and support is shared by many of our member businesses. It was with their encouragement that we decided to put ourselves forward for Silver Award status and we hope this announcement will inspire and encourage other organisations to join in with this vital cause.”

Welcoming the announcement, Chairman of Mersey Maritime and former Royal Navy Regional Commander for the North of England, Phil Waterhouse, said:

“This recognition reflects the entire Mersey Maritime team’s dedication and hard work to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for defence personnel. But not just our own, that of so many of our members too. With my own longstanding background in the Royal Navy, I know how synonymous the maritime industry is with the Armed Forces and Defence community. That relationship runs deep here in Liverpool and the wider North West and we are incredibly proud of it. Our Armed Forces Covenant journey began in 2018 and has gone from strength to strength. We look forward to developing it further in the years ahead.”

Commenting on the announcement of the 2024 Employer Recognition Scheme Silver awards; Colonel Mark Underhill OBE DL, Chief Executive at the North West of England and the Isle of Man Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (NW RFCA), said:

“On behalf of the Ministry of Defence we are honoured and delighted to be able to recognise the outstanding support and commitment given to the Armed Forces Covenant by businesses and organisations in the region, through the Employer Recognition Scheme awards. Each recipient has demonstrated not only that their support to the Covenant and the wider Armed Forces community, but also that they are prepared to support their Reservists, Service Leavers, Spouses, Veterans, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers and Cadets in the workplace.”
