MARITIME INNOVATON SPOTLIGHT: BIBBY MARINE

Following on from the Mersey Maritime Industry Awards 2025 which were held at the start of November, our latest ‘Maritime Innovation Spotlight’ focuses on the the winner of the Technology & Innovation Award, Bibby Marine. This award is made to a business, charity or organisation that has demonstrated or delivered / developed a technical or technological project, product or process. With their major and innovative work in this area, Bibby Marine were certainly worth winners!

The Team at Bibby Marine write:

Introduction

Bibby Marine, part of Bibby Line Group, delivers world-class offshore solutions. From our Bibby WaveMaster fleet of Service Operation Vessels, ensuring safe, seamless transport and premium accommodation, to versatile floating barges for shoreside and nearshore living, we set industry standards. Driving maritime innovation, we’re also building the world’s first electric CSOV—shaping a sustainable future for our sector.

What inspired the technology for this win?

We began our “roadmap to green” in 2019 when we committed to being the UK’s cleanest Service Operation Vessel (SOV) operator, aiming to operate a zero-emission SOV before 2030. The journey began with the WaveMaster Zero C Project, which sought to identify the best alternative fuel for next-generation SOVs. As part of our commitment, we participated in Clean Maritime Demonstration Competitions 1,2 and 4, culminating in the Zero Emission Vessel Infrastructure (ZEVI) Competition in 2023. Bibby Marine was awarded funding as the lead in a consortium to develop the world’s first truly net-zero Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (eCSOV).

The offshore wind industry has the potential to drive decarbonisation far beyond simply supplying low-carbon electricity. Across the entire value chain, there are significant opportunities to cut carbon emissions and pursue the energy transition at lower cost.

The electrification of SOVs is one of the most effective steps the industry can take towards this goal. Hybrid-electric vessels can deliver zero-emission operations and should be an essential goal for the industry. In Europe alone, construction of offshore wind farms is likely to triple in the next decade. Without action, this growth will lead to far higher emissions.

Built from the ground up, the eCSOV boasts unparalleled operational capabilities, with over 24-hour battery endurance and 130nm range, high voltage offshore charging facilities and a full operation on green methanol. The vessel has been designed and specified to service both commissioning and O&M phases of offshore wind fields, fitted with top-tier mission equipment, including a 3D Gangway and 10Te 3D crane from SMST. With an overall length of approximately 90m and a beam of 19.80m, it offers a large working deck, spacious environmentally controlled warehouse and ‘high end’ accommodation for 120 persons in 84 cabins.

Efficiency was key to the design of this vessel, from the selection of our closed-BUS DC grid power system and rim drive thruster units, to the selection of the gangway. Every aspect of the vessel has been careful considered to ensure optimum operation, whilst maximising our battery endurance.

We have worked with industry leading suppliers and partners to design and configure solutions to address this industry-wide problem. While vessel manufacturers, clients and regulators were not addressing the issue promptly, we took the initiative to resolve the problem in our usual pioneering manner resulting in a hybrid configuration that allows for seamless power transfer between battery and engine systems, ensuring maximum operational flexibility and redundancy and enabling up to 24-hours of zero-emission operations.

When offshore infrastructure is available, the vessel will be capable of connecting to 11kV, 6MWh AC charging, enabling a full battery recharge in under five hours while maintaining dynamic positioning. The battery pack supports extended periods of zero-emission operation offshore, as well as fully electric transit to and from port, and zero-emission port operations. With flexible shore charging options, the vessel is designed in order to operate with zero GHG emissions.

Bibby Marine’s proactive measures towards sustainability are exemplified by the eCSOV’s technical specifications and operational capabilities. The vessel’s design includes dedicated climate-controlled electrical stores, spacious cargo areas, and advanced propulsion systems. These features not only enhance operational efficiency but also contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of offshore operations. The eCSOV is projected to save 175,000 tonnes of CO2 over its 25-year lifespan, highlighting Bibby Marine’s leadership in fostering a more sustainable maritime sector.

How is this innovation helping to push the maritime sector forward?

Bibby Marine has made significant strides in advancing the maritime sector towards zero emissions with the development of the eCSOV. The eCSOV is equipped with a powerful battery system and dual-fuel methanol engines, allowing it to operate emission-free for an entire day on battery power alone, with the ability to recharge from offshore wind farms. Alternatively, this vessel can operate on day one on green methanol – so whether its electrons or molecules we can offer whatever green solution the client wants, while significantly reduced carbon emissions.

Bibby Marine’s proactive approach to sustainability is further demonstrated by the vessel’s technical specifications, which include dedicated climate-controlled electrical stores, spacious cargo areas, and advanced propulsion systems. These features not only enhance operational efficiency but also contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of offshore operations. Over its 25-year lifespan, the eCSOV is projected to save 175,000 tonnes of CO2 compared to conventional SOVs. This remarkable achievement positions Bibby Marine as a leader in the transition towards a more sustainable maritime sector.

What does receiving the Technology & Innovation Award mean to the team at Bibby Marine?

Winning the Technology and Innovation award at this year’s Mersey Maritime Awards, reinforces Bibby Marine’s position as a leader in the transition towards a zero-emission maritime sector. This recognition validates our efforts to innovate and implement sustainable practices and serves to further motivate the team to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the maritime industry. It also acknowledges their hard work and dedication.

As with any enhanced visibility, and as a recognised leader in sustainability, Bibby Marine is better positioned to showcase its ability as a British business to solve a global problem in our sector – to influence industry standards and advocate for more stringent environmental regulations. We hope that by winning this award we are able to drive broader change across the maritime sector, promoting the adoption of cleaner technologies and practices.
