Mersey Maritime has joined the Liverpool City Region (LCR) Cornerstone Employer programme, becoming part of a national network of businesses committed to improving careers education and expanding access to meaningful work experience.
Delivered in partnership with local Careers Hubs and led by the Careers & Enterprise Company, the initiative strengthens connections between education and industry while helping to create better outcomes for young people – particularly those from underserved communities.
As a Cornerstone Employer, Mersey Maritime will work collaboratively with the LCR Careers Hub and fellow employers to help deliver meaningful employer engagement activities aligned with local economic priorities. This includes:
- Advocating for and supporting high-quality, modern work experience opportunities.
- Using local data and insights to engage priority schools, colleges, and young people most in need of support.
- Promoting career pathways within the maritime, logistics and wider regional economy.
- Encouraging employer participation across its membership network and supply chain.
- Supporting educators, parents and carers with industry insight and labour market awareness
- Contributing to collaborative employer roundtables and shared best practice initiatives.
Cornerstone Employers also act as ambassadors for careers education, helping shape national strategy through locally led insight and collective employer voice, while completing annual Employer Standards assessments to strengthen and improve education outreach activity.
Funded by The Careers & Enterprise Company and delivered locally in partnership with the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, the LCR Careers Hub connects employers with schools, colleges, universities, and training providers. Through coordinated engagement, the Hub supports stronger pathways into employment and helps ensure regional industries have access to the skilled workforce they need.
Commenting on the announcement, Ruth Wood, CEO of Mersey Maritime, said: “We are delighted to be recognised as a Cornerstone Employer. As a membership organisation, Mersey Maritime plays a vital role in representing the maritime industry, connecting businesses with regional skills initiatives, and helping to shape the future workforce. This recognition allows us to collaborate with schools, colleges, and employers to ensure the sector’s skills needs are understood and supported, and to inspire the next generation to consider careers in maritime and logistics.”
Gill Walsh, Strategic Hub Lead – Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Careers Hub commented: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Mersey Maritime as a Cornerstone Employer within the LCR Careers Hub. The maritime sector sits at the heart of the Liverpool City Region’s economy, driving trade, growth, and innovation across a wide range of roles. Mersey Maritime’s commitment strengthens the connection between industry and education, helping to shape a future‑ready workforce through skills alignment, meaningful modern work‑experience opportunities, and clear pathways to help young people find their next best step.”
